Methadone Mortality Reassessment, July 20, 2007

On July 20, 2007, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment convened a meeting to reassess Methadone-associated mortality in response to the growing public health concern regarding the diversion, abuse, and deaths associated with Methadone.

Epidemiologists, law enforcement and regulatory officials, pain treatment specialist, cardiologists, opioid treatment representatives, together with individuals harmed by methadone mortality, gathered to review new information on methadone abuse, diversion, and mortality. The participants developed recommendations relating to provider education, case reporting and regulatory modifications. SAMHSA/CSAT is currently considering these suggestions for follow up action, and actions will be announced in the near future.

At this time, SAMHSA/CSAT is posting the material presented during the July 20 meeting. The posted agenda includes links to the PowerPoint presentations given by the participants.
